This book is the translation of Do Gharn Sokoot, into English by an Iranian scientist and scholar. Two Centuries of silence is the saga of 200 years of struggle by Iranians in order to free themselves from the yoke of Muslim Arabs- elegantly and passionately told by Abdolhossein Zarinkoob. The book elucidates the key reasons for the success of Muslim Arabs in their assault on Iran- a fact that was not written in the stars, nor was it an act of God. For its readers, this translation hopes to shed light on what forms the foundation of today’s Iran and help bring some understanding of Iranians and their culture.

The fall of Nah vand in 642 CE marked the end of a glorious fourteenth-century history of Iran-a fascinating and dynamic history spanning the years from 700 BCE to 700 CE. For two centuries thereafter, a brutally long, chilling silence cast its shadow over the history and language of Iran.

Professor Zarinkoob explores the reason behind the Sasanian downfall and how the uncouth Bedouins triumphed over an immense and glorious civilization such as that? During these two centuries- about which our recent historians have remained silent-why did Farsi become a “lost” language, obscure and traceless? In the time when Iranian swordsmen revolted against the Arabs under any pretext, fighting the Arabs and Muslims, how did Zoroastrian priests argue and debate in the light of knowledge and wisdom against the Muslim faith? Finally, why a book that tells the tale of a most turbulent period of Iran’s history is titles Two Centuries of Silence and not Two Centuries of Chaos and Uproar? Prof. Zarinkoob’s colorful narrative unravels these mysteries through Iranian eyes and is delivered here only as they may.

About Author:
Abdolhossein Zarinkoub (also spelled Zarrinkoob) was born in Borujerd. He was a prominent scholar of Iranian literature, history of literature, Persian culture, and history. He received his Ph.D. from Tehran University in 1955 under the supervision of Badiozzaman Forouzanfar, and held faculty positions at prestigious universities such as Oxford University, Sorbonne, and Princeton University, among many others. Due to his pioneering works on Iranian literature, literary criticism and comparative literature, he is considered as the father of modern Persian literature. Zarrinkoub’s solid research works made him a world class Iranologist and undisputed master of Persian literature and poetry. He was known for his extreme precision and solid works. He was the author of many books in Persian, French, and English, and published hundreds of articles. Some of his more famous works in English are: “The Arab Conquest of Iran and its Aftermath” in Cambridge History of Iran, Vol. 4, London, 1975; “Persian Sufism in its Historical Background,” in Iranian Studies III, 1970; and “Nezami, a Lifelong Quest for a Utopia,” 1977, Rome. One of his famous books entitled “Naghde Adabi” (Literary Criticism) is a classic book on Persian literary criticism. Zarrinkoub is also known for his profound research on revered Iranian poet Mowlana Jalaleddin Mohammad, aka “Rumi.” Zarrinkoub’s “Serr-e Ney” (Secret of the Reed) and “Bahr dar Koozeh” (Sea in a Jug) are critical and comparative analysis of Mowlana’s “Masnavi.” “Pelleh Pelleh ta Molaghate Khoda” (Step-by-Step until Visiting God) is also a work he carried out on the same theme. Zarrinkoub’s research works on Hafez and Persian mysticism resulted in several books: “Az Koucheh-ye Rendan” and “Arzesh-e Miras-e Soufi-yeh.” His classic history book, “Two Centuries of Silence” is one the most reliable sources on the history of Iran/Persia after fall of the Sasaninan Empire. This book is undergoing translation into English by Mazda Publishers and will be available in the near future.

دو قرن سکوت» نخست به صورت پاورقی در نشریه «مهرگان» ارگان «جامعه لیسانسیه‌های دانشسرای عالی» چاپ شد. سپس در سال???? برای نخستین بار به صورت کتاب توسط همان نهاد منتشر شد. پس از نخستین انتشار در زمان پهلوی دوم، به سرعت چاپ اول «دو قرن سکوت» نایاب می‌شود. دکتر زرین‌کوب به تجدید چاپ رضایت نمی‌دهد تا در فرصت مناسب به تجدید نظر درباره? کتاب بپردازد. زرین‌کوب جوان، پنج سال وقت و انرژی صرف می‌کند و منابع متعدد را از دیده می‌گذارند تا در اردیبهشت ???? متن گسترش یافته و تجدید نظر شده اثر از سوی انتشارات امیرکبیر منتشر می‌شود. او در مقدمه? ویرایش دوم، برخی از انتقادات ویرایش اول کتاب را ناشی از جوانی و تعصب خود در آن هنگام می‌داند. از فروردین ???? متن «دو قرن سکوت» از چاپ دوم به بعد تغییر نکرد و چاپ‌های بعدی بر پایه? همین متن انجام شده‌است. «دو قرن سکوت» پس از انقلاب بطور رسمی توسط انتشارات جاویدان منتشر شد که هفته بعد از انتشار جمع‌آوری شد.[نیازمند منبع] سرانجام پس از گذشت بیست سال از پیروزی انقلاب، کتاب «دو قرن سکوت» مجوز چاپ گرفت و انتشارات سخن، چاپ نهم آن را منتشر کرد. در ابتدای این کتاب نقد مرتضی مطهری بر این کتاب -که بخشی از کتاب «خدمات متقابل ایران و اسلام» بوده‌است- عیناً آورده می‌شود که به تحلیل‌های زرین کوب پاسخ داده شده‌است.

درباره نویسنده:

عبدالحسین زرین کوب ادیب، تاریخ نگار، منتقد ادبی، نویسنده، و مترجم برجستهٔ ایران معاصر است. آثار او به عنوان مرجع عمده در مطالعات تصوف و مولوی شناسی شناخته می شود. وی از تاریخ نگاران برجستهٔ ایران است و آثار معروفی در تاریخ ایران و نیز تاریخ اسلام دارد. این آثار به دلیل بیان ادبی و حماسی تاریخ از آثار پرفروش در میان ایرانیان هستند.زرین کوب بیش از چهار دهه در دانشگاه تهران، ادبیات فارسی، تاریخ اسلام و تاریخ ایران تدریس کرد و پس از انقلاب، با مرکز دائرةالمعارف بزرگ اسلامی همکاری کرد، از جمله این که ۶۵۰۰ کتاب و مجله را به دائرةالمعارف بزرگ اسلامی اهدا کرد.
