The Three Drops of Blood is a work by Sadegh Hedayat, first published in 1932. This incredibly fascinating and strange short story best demonstrates Hedayat’s ability and talent in writing emotional, disturbing and influential prose and, like The Blind Owl, establishes his place among the great writers and stylists of the last century. Hedayat’s prose depicts a world full of mysteries, confusion, emptiness and madness. The story of Three Drops of Blood follows a character who is gradually but steadily losing his sanity and the stability of his identity, and who is constantly confronted with three drops of blood before his eyes or inside his mind. In this work, by presenting a strange and unfamiliar story, Sadegh Hedayat succeeds in exploring universal truths and looking at human nature from a new perspective.
