JOHN GHAZVINIAN was born in Iran and raised in London and Los Angeles. He has a doctorate in history from Oxford University and was the recipient of a “Public Scholar” fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities in 2016-2017, as well as a fellowship from the Carnegie Corporation”s special initiative on Islam in 2009-2010. Ghazvinian”s writing has appeared in Newsweek, The Sunday Times, New Statesman, Slate, and The Nation. He directs the Middle East Center at the University of Pennsylvania and lives in Philadelphia

این واقعیت را نمی‌توان نادیده گرفت که نه همه‌ی دشمنی‌ها ابدی‌اند و نه همه‌ی دوستی‌ها. تک‌تک آدم‌ها این‌گونه‌اند و کشورها هم قاعدتا باید به همین سیاق باشند، به خاصه که مناسبات میان کشورها را بیشتر از آن‌که مردمان‌شان معلوم کنند، حکمرانان معلوم می‌کنند. ایران و روسیه با جنگ‌های ده‌ها ساله طی سه سده‌ی گذشته و اینکه روس‌ها بارها دست به کشتار و خون‌ریزی و تجاوز به خاک و مال و مردم ایران زده‌اند، امروز قاعدتا باید بزرگ‌ترین دشمن ایران باشند، درحالی‌که به انتخاب حاکمان، امروز دوست و برادر خوانده می‌شوند. به همین سیاق در نقطه‌ی مقابل، ایران و آمریکا هستند که سبقه‌ی دوستی‌شان از 1720 میلادی شروع شده و موسسان کشور آمریکا خودشان را مأنوس با تاریخ ایران می‌دانسته‌اند و هیچ‌گاه هم رو در رو با ما نجنگیده‌اند و لااقل تا کودتای 28 مرداد 1332 فکر نمی‌کردیم دشمنی‌ای میان دو کشور وجود دارد. با این‌همه، ماجراهای مرداد 32 و آبان 58 نمی‌توانند پاک‌کننده‌ی تاریخ روابط حسنه‌ی بین دو سرزمین باشند. کتاب «ایران و آمریکا: از 1720 میلادی تا امروز» نوشته‌ی جان قزوینیان بر همین نکته استوار است و ماجراها، دوستی‌ها و دشمنی‌های بین این دو کشور را طی سه قرن بررسی کرده است. ایران و آمریکا به عمق روابط این دو کشور در سایه‌ی حکمرانان و مردمان‌شان در بستر تاریخ واقعی واقعا اتفاق افتاده نظر می‌کند و این مسئله را در نظر می‌گیرد و بر آن صحه می‌گذارد که تاریخ سرزمین‌ها را باید ورای روایت‌های یک‌سویه دید و تحلیل و تفسیر کرد.

درباره نویسنده:
جان قزوینیان (John Ghazvinian) روزنامه‌نگار و مورخ ایرانی و آمریکایی است. وی مدیر موقت مرکز خاور میانه در دانشگاه پنسیلوانیا در فیلادلفیا است. قزوینیان که در ایران زاده شد در لندن و لس آنجلس بزرگ شد. او هم اکنون در فیلادلفیا زندگی می‌کند. وی به دلیل نوشتن مقاله در مورد سیاست‌های نفتی آفریقا، نویسنده کتاب Untapped: Scramble for Oil Africa (هارکورت، ۲۰۰۷)، و یک نمایشگاه صنعت نفت در آفریقا شناخته می‌شود.
قزوینیان همچنین برای فصلنامه نیشن، نیوزویک، جی کیو و ویرجینیا می‌نویسد. او نویسنده Iran and America: A History و همچنین هماهنگ‌کننده مقاله American and Muslim Worlds before 1900 است.
