The Shahnameh (Persian: شاهنامه, romanized: Šāhnāme, lit. ’The Book of Kings’, pronounced [ʃɒːhnɒːˈme]), also transliterated Shahnama, is a long epic poem written by the Persian poet Ferdowsi between c. 977 and 1010 CE and is the national epic of Greater Iran. Consisting of some 50,000 “distichs” or couplets (two-line verses), the Shahnameh is one of the world’s longest epic poems. It tells mainly the mythical and to some extent the historical past of the Persian Empire from the creation of the world until the Muslim conquest in the seventh century. Iran, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan and the greater region influenced by Persian culture such as Armenia, Dagestan, Georgia, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan celebrate this national epic.

The work is of central importance in Persian culture and Persian language. It is regarded as a literary masterpiece, and definitive of the ethno-national cultural identity of Iran.

شاهنامه شامل سه بخش اسطوره ، حماسه و تاریخ است. بخش اسطوره از آغاز شاهنامه تا پایان کار فریدون است. بخش حماسه از اول پادشاهی منوچهر تا پایان کار رستم و بخش تاریخ از امپراطوری اسکندر تا پایان کتاب است. البته این طور نیست که اسطوره و حماسه و تاریخ کاملا و مشخصا جدا ایستاده و تداخل نکرده باشند. من فکر کردم برای شما، بخش اسطوره و حماسه را بیاورم و بخش تاریخ را برای آینده بگذارم. البته از بخش تاریک تاریخ یکی از دلایل انقراض ساسانیان را به شما نشان می دهم

درباره نویسنده:
ابوالقاسم فردوسی طوسی (زاده ی 329 هجری قمری – درگذشت 416 هجری قمری)، شاعر حماسه سرای ایرانی و سراینده ی شاهنامه، حماسه ی ملی ایران، است. بعضی افراد فردوسی را بزرگترین سراینده ی پارسی گو دانسته اند که از شهرت جهانی برخوردار است. فردوسی را حکیم سخن و حکیم طوس می گویند.
ابوالقاسم فردوسی متولد 319 خورشیدی در خراسان، شاعر بود. نام کاملش ابوالقاسم حسن منصور بن محمد بن اسحاق شرفشاه بوده و در روستای باژ از توابغ بلوک طابران طوس در دوران سلطنت سامانیان متولد شده است. پدرش ابومنصور از کشاورزان بزرگ خراسان بوده و مادرش گردویه زهرا دختر یکی از شاهزادگان مازندرانی به نام اسپهبدان بود، او سه خواهر تنی هم داشت.
