کتاب «منطق‌الطیر» عطار نیشابوری، با تصحیح و شرح استاد فرزانه محمدرضا شفیعی کدکنی، تدوین شده است.
این اثر حاصل کار بیشتر از سی سال تامل و تدریس و دقت استاد شفیعی کدکنی در آثار عطار و تصوف خراسان است که بارها و بارها تجدید چاپ شده است.
عطار و منظومه‌ی فرهنگی پیرامون او، از زندگی تاریخی تا افسانه‌ها و از آثار مسلم او تا مجموعه‌ی وسیعی از مجعولات و منحولات دوره‌های بعد، که منسوب به اوست، بی‌شباهت به یک مذهب یا آیین نیست.در شرح احوال فریدالدین عطار نیشابوری سخن‌ها گفته شده، اما آن‌چه بی گمان بر همه مسلم است منطق الطیر همچون نگینی بر انگشتری شعر و ادب پارسی است که حکایتی از سرگشتی انسانی را دارد که در طلب معشوق تمامی وادی‌های عرفان را طی می‌کند تا به مقام نیستی برسد و در نهایت همه عاشق، معشوق گردد. «نبود او و بود، چون باشد این؟/ از خیال عقل بیرون باشد این»
“منطق الطیر” یا “مقامات الطیور” اثر “شیخ فرید الدین عطار نیشابوری” منظومه‌ای فارسی است که در آن، گروهی از پرندگان جهان گرد هم می‌آیند تا به دنبال پادشاهی که تا به حال نداشته‌اند، بگردند. هدهد که از همه داناتر است به آنها پیشنهاد می‌کند که سیمرغ افسانه‌ای را پیدا کنند. هر یک از پرندگان نشان‌دهنده یکی از ضعف‌های شخصیتی انسان است که مانع از رسیدن نوع بشر به روشنایی و آگاهی می‌شود. هدهد این پرندگان را هدایت می‌کند و به آنها می‎گوید که باید از هفت وادی عبور کنند تا به محل زندگی سیمرغ برسند.
هر کدام از این هفت وادی، همچون یک ماموریت بزرگ بر سر راه پرندگان قرار دارد. وادی طلب، با کنار گذاشتن همه تعصبات، باورها و بی‌ایمانی‌ها آغاز می‌شود و وادی عشق، جایی است که عقل به خاطر عشق رها شده است. در وادی معرفت، دانش دنیوی به کلی بیهوده می‌شود و وادی استغنا جایی است که تمام خواسته‌ها و دلبستگی‌های دنیوی کنار گذاشته می‌شود. وادی توحید، به پرندگان می‎فهماند که معشوق فراتر از همه چیز اعم از هماهنگی و کثرت و ابدیت است و وادی حیرت جایی است که رهرو از زیبایی معشوق، متحیر می‌شود و غرق در هیبت، می‌بیند که هرگز چیزی ندانسته و نفهمیده است. آخرین وادی “منطق الطیر” از “شیخ فرید الدین عطار نیشابوری”، فقر است که به فنا منجر می‌شود.
وقتی پرندگان وصف این هفت منزل را می‌شنوند، با ناراحتی سر خم می‌کنند و حتی برخی از ترس، همان لحظه جان می‎دهند. اما بقیه با وجود ترس و وحشت، سفر بزرگ را آغاز می‌کنند. در راه، بسیاری از تشنگی، گرما یا بیماری جان خود را از دست می دهند، در حالی که برخی دیگر طعمه حیوانات وحشی، ترس و خشونت می شوند. نهایتا تنها سی پرنده به سیمرغ می‌رسند و حقیقتی بزرگ برای آنها آشکار می‎شود. آنها سرانجام می‌فهمند که عظمت معشوق مانند خورشیدی است که در آینه منعکس شده است و با این حال، هر کس به آن آینه نگاه کند، تصویر خود را نیز در آن خواهد دید.

درباره نویسنده:

فریدالدین ابوحامد محمد عطار نیشابوری مشهور به شیخ عطّار نیشابوری (۱۱۴۶م/۵۴۰ق -۱۲۲۱م/۶۱۸ق) یکی از عارفان و شاعران ایرانی بلندنام ادبیات فارسی در پایان سدهٔ ششم و آغاز سدهٔ هفتم است. او در سال ۵۴۰ هجری برابر با ۱۱۴۶ میلادی در نیشابور زاده شد و در ۶۱۸ هجری به هنگام حملهٔ مغول به قتل رسید.
