The Eternal Tao Te Ching is the first translation to employ the meanings of the pre-writing brush characters in use 2,500 years ago, when the classic was written, rather than relying on the often-different meanings of the more modern brush characters, as other translations have done. Hoff points out in his chapter notes the many incidents of meddling and muddling that have been made over the centuries by scholars and copyists, and he corrects the mistakes and removes such tampering from the text. Hoff also makes the provocative claim—and demonstrates by revealing clues in the text—that the Tao Te Ching’s author was a young nobleman hiding his identity, rather than the long-alleged author, the “Old Master” of legend, Lao-tzu. And Hoff’s chapter notes shed new light on the author’s surprisingly modern viewpoint. With a selection of lyrical color landscape photographs by the author, this is a unique, and uniquely accessible, presentation of the Tao Te Ching.

Benjamin Hoff is an American author. He is best known as the author of The Tao of Pooh and The Te of Piglet. In 2006, he denounced the publishing industry and announced his resignation from book-writing. His book, The Singing Creek Where the Willows Grow, won the American Book Award in 1988.

تقریباً ۲۵۰۰ سال قبل، مردی در مرز هن-کو (Han-ku) در شمال غربی چین ظاهر شد. او در جهت جنگلی که در فرای سرزمین چین بود سفر می‌کرد. مرزبان مرد را که به لااُتزه (Lao-tze)، استاد مسن، مشهور بود شناخت و از سخنانش متوجّه شد که نظر بازگشت به سرزمین چین را ندارد. مرزبان از استاد خواهش کرد که مجموعی از اصولی را که در زندگی به کار گرفته به جای بگذارد. بعد از امتناع مکرّر، استاد رضایت داد و روی ورقه‌های بامبو چیزهایی را که مفید تلقّی می‌کرد نوشت. او ورقه‌ها را تقدیم کرد و به سفر خود ادامه داد و از دیدگاه مرزبان ناپدید شد.
جملاتی که او بجا گذاشت به اسم تااُ ته چینگ (تااُ٬ مزیّت پایدار) شناخته شده است. تااُ تقریباً بعنوان روش‌ها یا قوانین قوّۀ حیاتی که درون همه چیز و در هر وقتی یافته می‌شود و همچنان خود قوّه، غیر قابل تفکیک از حرکات برونیش، قابل توصیف است.

بنجامین هاف نویسنده آمریکایی است. او بیشتر به عنوان نویسنده کتاب های تائو پو شناخته می شود. او در سال 2006 صنعت نشر را محکوم کرد و از کتاب نویسی کناره گیری کرد. کتاب نهر آوازخوانی که در آن بیدها رشد می کنند، در سال 1988 برنده جایزه کتاب آمریکا شد.
