The Persian Empire was the world’s first hyperpower, with territory stretching from Central Asia to Northeastern Africa and from Southeastern Europe to the Indus Valley. It was the dominant geopolitical force from the later sixth century to its conquest by Alexander in the 330s BCE. Much of the empire’s territory was conquered by its founder, Cyrus the Great, who reigned from 559-530 BCE. Cyrus became a legend in his own lifetime, and his career inspired keen interest from Persia’s unruly neighbors to the west, the ancient Greeks. The idealized portrait of Cyrus by the Greek Xenophon had a profound impact on ancient, medieval, and early modern debates about rulership. King of the World provides an authoritative and accessible account of Cyrus the Great’s life, career, and legacy. While Greek sources remain central to any narrative about Cyrus, a wealth of primary evidence is found in the ancient Near East, including documentary, archaeological, art historical, and biblical material. Matt Waters draws from all of these sources while consistently contextualizing them in order to provide a cohesive understanding of Cyrus the Great. This overview addresses issues of interpretation and reconciles limited material, while the narrative keeps Cyrus the Great’s compelling career at the forefront.

کورش بزرگ، بنیانگذار شاهنشاهی پارسی هخامنشی، از 559 تا 530 پ­م سلطنت کرد. او از افرادی بود که تاریخ جهان را تغییر داد و برای مردم گوناگون شخصیتی متفاوت بود: برای پارسیان آغازین و عیلامیان کورش رهبری استثنایی بود که آنان را به عرصۀ جهانی وارد کرد، جهانی که از آسیای مرکزی تا آناتولی و فراسوی آن امتداد داشت؛ فردی مبتکر که زندگی آنان را به کلّ، هم در ظاهر و هم در عمل، تغییر داد. برای بابلیان باستان، کورش در قد و اندازۀ حمورابی درآمد و با این که خارجی بود، کاملا با سنت‌های آنان همخوانی داشت. برای عبرانیان باستان، کورش شخصیتی بنیادین در آزادی آنان از سلطۀ بابلیان بود، به طوری که او را عملا ناجی خود خواندند. کورش به آنان کمک کرد تا معبد سلیمان [نبی] را دوباره بسازند و دوره­ای را آغاز کرد که امروزه «دورۀ معبد دوم» خوانده می­شود. برای نویسندگان یونانی و رومی، کورش فرمانروایی آرمانی بود که در وجودش برترین خصیصه‌­های رهبری و نبوغ جمع شده بود، اما در عین حال می ‌توانست فرماندۀ نظامی بی­‌محابا و بی­رحمی نیز باشد. در عصر اخیر نیز چنین ویژگی‌های برتری به کورش نسبت داده شده، و برای بسیاری از مردم، او کماکان نماد وطن‌دوستی به شمار می ‌رود که شکوه نخستین دوره‌های تاریخ ایران را در خود جمع کرده است.
