About Author:
Andrei Beley (born Boris Nikolaevich Bugaev) was born 26 October 1880. Beley was educated at Moscow University where he studied science and philosophy, before turning his focus to literature. In 1904 he published his first collection of poems, Gold in Azure, which was followed in 1909 by his first novel, The Silver Dove. Beley”s most famous novel, Petersburg, was pubilshed in 1916. His work is considered to have heavily influenced several literary schools, most notably Symbolism, and his impact on Russian writing has been compared to that of James Joyce on the English speaking world. Adam Thirlwell (b.1978) studied English at New College, Oxford, and was subsequently elected as a fellow of All Souls College, Oxford in 1999. In 2003 his first novel, Politics, won the Betty Trask Award, and Miss Herbert, published in 2007, won the Somerset Maugham Award. Thirlwell”s third novel, The Escape, was published in September 2009.David McDuff was educated at the University of Edinburgh and has translated a number of works for Penguin Classics, including Dostoyevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov.

ولادیمیر نابوکف چهار رمـان را برجستهترین شاهـکارهای منثور قرن بیستم دانسته است: در جستوجوی زمان از دست رفتهی پـروست، مسخ کافـکا، اولیـس جویس و پطرزبورگ بیهلی. این مقـام به سبب ویژگیهـای غـریب سبک و زبـان نویسنده به او بخشیده شده است و نیز فضای شگفتانگیزی که از روسیه در سال 1905 خلق کرده است. در این رمـان به پرسش هویت ملی نیز پرداخته است؛ در جغرافیایی میان شرق و غـرب، در میان ملتی که پـایی در آسیا و پایی در اروپا دارند؛ نگاهی از پنجرهی شرق به غرب، و نمادی از ابـهامها و تناقضها در سرشت مـردمان روس. در این رمان تاریخ و فرهنگ و سیاست در هم آمیختهاند یا کنار هم قـرار گرفتهاند. نویسنده با خلق فضایی وهـمآلود، در شهری که پایههایش بر آب است و اقلیمی مـهآلود دارد و خـود به شخصیت اصـلی رمـان بدل میشود، اثـری یگانه آفریـده است با زبـانی یـگانه و تصاویر ذهنـی که در تاریـخ ادبیات روسیه تا آن زمان نظیر نداشته است، هر چند ــ در عین خـرق عادت ــ وامـدار سنت رماننویسی روسی هـم هست. رمـانی پیش رویمـان است که گویی هیچچیز در آن قطعیت نمییـابد، همهچیز سیال است، حتی محل زندگی شخصیتها یا وقوع رویدادها. بیهلی پطرزبورگ خود را خلق کرده است و این افسانه را در ادبیات روس که این شهر شهرِ اشباح و سایههاست تداوم بخشیده است.
درباره نویسنده:
بوریس نیکلایِوچ بوگایِف (۲۶ اکتبر ۱۸۸۰ – ۸ ژانویه ۱۹۳۴) مشهور به آندری بلی شاعر، رماننویس، نظریهپرداز و منتقد ادبی کمونیست اهل امپراتوری روسیه بود. مهمترین اثرش، رمان پترزبورگ، از سوی نابوکوف به عنوان یکی از چهار شاهکار بزرگ منثور قرن بیستم معرفی شدهاست.
